The USWNT is the first and only team to hold the title three times.
It was a sweet victory as the USWNT was able to redeem themselves after they lost to Japan in a dramatic penalty shoot out in the 2011 Women's World Cup Final.
The U.S. had a phenomenal first half, scoring four out of five goals. U.S. player Carli Lloyd pulled an amazing hat trick, scoring an astounding three goals for the U.S. team in the first sixteen minutes of the game.
Her third goal was a shot heard around the world, taken just shy from midfield. Lloyd admitted that she had dreamt of making that shot.
"I did it once in training but very rarely do you wind up and hit it like that," Lloyd informed, as quoted from BBC.com, Monday (6/7/2015). "You train and train and train and I dreamed of scoring a shot like that," Llyod added.
Lloyd also took home the Golden Ball, a prestigious award for being the best player of the tournament.
Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath also scored a goal for the USWNT in the fourteenth and fifty-forth minutes, respectively.
Earning Japan their two goals were Yuki Ogimi in the twenty-seventh minute and an accidental own goal from USA’s Julie Johnston in the fifty-second minute.
Also receiving a wealth of praise from the tournament is USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo, who had a total of three saves in the World Cup Final.
Solo walked away with the Golden Glove, honoring her for being the best goalkeeper in the tournament.
